Creative Writing 101 A Story by Nicolas Lemieux (Nanofiction Writing Battle, August 2024) Too hot inside; pressure building up. Your chest is out to explode—your whole body, like fireworks. There’s no containing this anymore. You breathe. But the more you sink into it, that old rocking chair pits prison bars against your back—A vise, crushing your thorax. Shut your eyes, a fallen tree squishes your torso; a boulder caves you in. Your brain spasms. Too many sparks, too many longings—so little time. This is your life, whooshing by. So many ideas.

No mistake, that thing wants out. It’s going off, with or without you. Your choice. Invoke the mentors all you want. The writers, life coaches… Heck, invoke yourself while you’re at it. All the help you can get. So you try. And try again. Attempt something else. Lie to yourself it’s only practice. Lean on it, push, spend all your might. Shoulder to the wheel until your back cracks. Lungs ablaze, limbs buckled… Blood gels over. Mind reduces to a ripe tomato—It bursts.

You can’t. Your flames are quenched. Give up already. Get some shut-eye. Yet, it’s still there—No escape for you. Story wants a life too. What if you dared… Excavate. Scoop the ashes. Plow the goo. Tread murky waters... Careful! Something changed.

You look twice. There. While you were away, it happened. Your brain was mush, yet like a furry mold, a new thing grew in there. You’re not sure what it is. You might never know. But it’s alive. Small enough to sip through.
