Interview With Larry Yoke
Author of Creative, Multi-Genre Fiction and Poetry
From my first glance at his work, I definitely wanted to interview Larry Yoke!
I knew I would find many connections between our respective writing genres, because even though I am working on a science fiction project myself, I do like adding mysterious and thrilling elements to my stories, and I do enjoy a poetic touch.
Without further ado, here is the interview...
Larry Yoke, what inspired you to become a writer?
I started writing poetry when I was 9 years old to impress a certain little lady I wanted to be friends with. After that, I learned to play acoustic guitar and put words with music. I didn’t write my first novel Possum Kingdom until much later. I had this story to put down on the page and my muse wouldn’t leave alone until I did. I loved the writing process and have stuck with it! It’s what I do!
What are you best known for?
I write poetry, short stories, novellas, and multi genre fiction mixed with real life and historical stories.
Do you have a favorite genre in which you like to write?
I write only in fiction because it allows me to be creative, absurd, or anything the story needs to make it believable and interesting.
Have you ever considered writing under a pen name for one or more of your chosen genres? Why and why not?
No pen names! It’s a lot of work on my part and I want any/all credit that’s due. It’s my legacy that I existed!
Do you have an ideal reader in mind for each book or genre, and if so, who are they?
My stories are for the eyes and hearts of adults only. Not at all pornographic, but very adult themes!
Can you tell us about what you are currently working on?
I’m working on a story about Hurricane Harvey that struck Texas in 2017. This one will be readable by just about anyone. It’s more in the action-drama genre.
Give us an insight into your main character. What does he/she do that is special?
My crime series has a female Hispanic detective, Gloria Ramos, that is schooled in MMA techniques and therefore does not feel the need to shoot first, but uses her hands and feet to stop the bad person. The gun is used only as a last resort.
What advice would you give in regards to writing?
Writing is not for the faint of heart nor the once in a while scribbler. Writing a book is something that only 1% of the world’s population actually does start and finish. Sit down at the computer, write what’s in your heart and mind, then go back to rewrite and revise as many times as you deem necessary to make your story shine. Don’t mess around, stick to it = write the damn book!
What is your favorite approach to author marketing, and how do you manage to balance it with writing and the rest of life in general? What is your advice in that realm?
I love to write, but I also love to share those writings with others. I self-market, since I’m an Indie author, all over social media. I do podcasts, radio, and written interviews. I’ve hired a publicist to help with the social media arm of that effort to allow me the freedom to do what I want to do… write!
